Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
